Marble Falls team tennis beats Lago Vista

The Marble Falls High School team tennis team defeated Lago Vista 16-3 Sept. 19 in District 25-4A play.

The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs won all the boys and girls doubles matches, six in all, and lost only one boys singles, one girls singles and the mixed doubles match.

“Lago Vista lost a lot of boys,” Marble Falls head coach Samuel Whitley said. “They have one young man (Colten Lane), who’s really good. He and Cooper (Womack) had a great singles match.”

Womack prevailed in two sets, though the final set went to a tiebreaker.

The coach noted his players didn’t seem to have the same intensity they showed in other matches to begin the day.

“(Assistant coach Nathan) Redman and I were a little disappointed in how we started,” he said. “We seemed a little sluggish. After 30 minutes, we got on track. After playing (Little River) Academy (the district leader), you normally have a little bit of a hangover.”

Whitley pointed out his players continue to reap the rewards of all the work they’ve done during the offseason and summer. He used an interesting stat to illustrate his point. In matches against Belton New Tech, Lago Vista and Salado, Marble Falls has only lost a total of three matches.

Those three opponents, along with Burnet, were in last year’s district with Marble Falls. Burnet welcomes Marble Falls Tuesday, Oct. 1.

“it’s very satisfying right now,” the coach said. “We’ve won most of the tiebreakers. Last year we lost most of them. You get better each year and experience. When you play tiebreakers, they can be stressful. The more you play them, the better you get and the more comfortable you get playing in tiebreakers. It’s always nice to be hungry.”

Though Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch already forfeited, Marble Falls will host the team at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. The reason for the forfeit is because Legacy Ranch doesn’t have enough players for a varsity squad. It will face the Marble Falls junior varsity instead.

Meanwhile, the Marble Falls varsity will travel to play Mason Tuesday, Sept. 24.
